Highway 50 Corridor Mobility Partnership Receives 2007 League of California Cities Award
The League of California Cities announced at its annual conference in Sacramento on Sept. 5 that the Highway 50 Corridor Mobility Partnership was selected as a 2007 Helen Putnam Award winner in the category of Effective Advocacy, Intergovernmental Relations and Regional Cooperation. According to the League, “The Helen Putnam Award for Excellence program recognizes outstanding cities that deliver the highest quality and level of service in the most effective manner possible.” Of the 115 nominations submitted in 2007, 27 cities were honored with awards.

The greater Sacramento region has reached an important moment in defining its transportation and economic future.

Unless there are significant transportation improvements on the Highway 50 Corridor, eastern Sacramento County and western El Dorado County – including the cities of Rancho Cordova, Folsom and El Dorado Hills – are at significant risk to lose jobs, investment and a high quality of life enjoyed by the area’s residents and workers.

Fortunately, something is being done to address this important and increasingly urgent situation.  Local, regional and state government representatives, working collaboratively with area land owners as the 50 Corridor Mobility Partnership, have identified several priority transportation improvements that will significantly improve mobility and provide new transportation choices in the Highway 50 Corridor.

This effort, the first of its kind in the Sacramento region, is designed to proactively and comprehensively address the Highway 50 Corridor’s current and growing congestion problem rather than developing incremental improvements in a reactive, piece-meal fashion.

Recognizing the value of this innovative approach, the Sacramento Area Council of Governments in November 2006 presented one of its annual SACOG Salutes planning awards to the partnership. In addition, the Folsom and Rancho Cordova City Councils, and El Dorado County and Sacramento County Boards of Supervisors in December 2006 unanimously approved resolutions expressing support for the public-private planning effort.

The 50 Mobility Coalition is actively supporting implementation of the partnership’s recommended transportation improvements that will improve mobility, relieve congestion and reduce dependence on auto travel throughout the 50 Corridor.
